A stadium in search of a team became one of football’s most eventful stories
Chelsea Football Club was founded on 10 March 1905 to play at Stamford Bridge. The new club entered the Football League that year, attracted huge crowds and reached its first FA Cup final within a decade.
The first league championship arrived under Ted Drake in 1955. Tommy Docherty’s young side won the League Cup in 1965, while Dave Sexton led Chelsea to the FA Cup in 1970 and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1971.
After difficult years and a revival under John Neal, Chelsea returned to the trophy stage in the late 1990s. The archive also records the people and events behind that recovery: Ray Wilkins captaining the club as a teenager, Matthew Harding’s investment in Stamford Bridge and his death on 22 October 1996, and the players who carried Chelsea through distinct generations.
The modern era brought sustained domestic success, two Champions League victories, two Europa Leagues and, in 2025, the completion of the full set of major UEFA men’s club competitions.
The 2025–26 campaign and Xabi Alonso’s July 2026 appointment mark the archive’s current cutoff. Active records are dated and no result is projected.
