Who creates the archive
John Williams is the disclosed pen name of the editor and researcher responsible for source selection, original writing, fact-checking and corrections. Automation supports consistency but does not replace editorial review.
Source hierarchy
- Official Chelsea FC, competition and governing-body records.
- National museums, libraries, archives and established statistical institutions.
- Reputable contemporary reporting for events or decisions not fully preserved by primary records.
- High-quality reference works for discovery and cross-checking, never as the sole authority for a substantial disputed claim.
How automation is used
Scripts generate repeated navigation, metadata, archive tables and calculated measures such as win rate, goal difference and per-game scoring. They also check identifiers, links, arithmetic, canonical URLs and sitemap membership.
Automation does not invent tactics, motives or atmosphere from statistics. Long-form articles, interpretations and decisions about historical importance are written and reviewed separately from the generators. Where generated records are not substantial enough to stand alone, they are consolidated into the season, manager or player hub.
How claims are cited
Long-form research includes numbered source notes linked from the sections they support. Statistical pages place their source list beside the relevant record and state the scope of the figures. Sources support facts; their wording is not copied.
Definitions and comparison limits
League names, points systems and programme lengths remain in their historical context. The abandoned 1939–40 programme is not compared with an ordinary season. Manager match records cover senior men’s first-team competitions in one shared table, while caretaker and permanent spells remain labelled because raw win rates are not context-free.
Review and correction
Current facts are dated. Material corrections are made in the canonical dataset or page source, recorded in the public change log and regenerated through the same validation process. Disputed accounts are attributed rather than silently presented as settled fact.

Engagement features and measurement
The daily feature uses verified calendar dates and otherwise falls back to a deterministic archive selection. The weekly quiz is generated from reviewed season, player and manager records; every question retains source identifiers and a related canonical archive destination.
Plausible Analytics measurement remains disabled until its production script is configured.
