Athens twice: Chelsea's first European trophy
A drawn final, a replay two days later and victory over Real Madrid completed Chelsea's first European campaign with the Cup Winners' Cup.
Europe after the FA Cup
Winning the 1970 FA Cup placed Chelsea in the European Cup Winners' Cup for the first time. The tournament gave Sexton's side a different sequence of opponents and travel demands while the domestic season continued.
The route to Athens
Chelsea progressed through the competition and met Manchester City in an all-English semi-final. Reaching the final against Real Madrid placed a club with no previous European trophy opposite one of the competition's most established names.
A final without a winner
The first match in Athens ended 1-1 after extra time. Peter Osgood scored for Chelsea before Real Madrid equalised late. The rules required a replay rather than a shootout, so the teams returned to the same ground two days later.

John Dempsey and Osgood gave Chelsea a two-goal lead in the replay. Real Madrid pulled one back, but Chelsea held on to win 2-1 and lift the club's first European trophy.
A durable European reference point
The honour did not begin uninterrupted continental participation; Chelsea's later financial and sporting difficulties followed. Its importance lies in establishing that European success belonged to the club's history decades before the Champions League era.
